Orienteering Event

Not even two weeks into the new year and we have our first adventure on the calendar. This Sunday, January 16 will be the first orienteering event of the 2011. It is PERFECT for beginners. If you’re interested in doing any adventure racing this year, I highly recommend you attend this event to get some orienteering practice in a laid back atmosphere not too far from home. The event is put on by the Bay Area Orienteering Club (BAOC) and will be at our very own Shell Ridge. The great thing about most orienteering events is that you start whenever you want to!! Course start times are from 10am – 12:30pm and the course closes at 2pm.

Get to know this wonderful sport. Typically more local and a lot less gear needed than adventure racing. For more info on Sunday’s event, click here or on the link in the Races/Events section in the right-hand column.

Joel Salatin

Fans of the movies Food, Inc. and Fresh as well as Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma will remember Joel Salatin from Polyface Farms in Virginia. On Friday, January 21, Joel will be speaking in Berkeley and will be introduced by Michael Pollan. The cost, which benefits local food justice organizations, is $10. I recommend buying tickets online as they are predicting the venue may fill to capacity. You can find location and more information here.

Joel’s family farm, Polyface Farm, is an innovative model of community-supported agriculture that seeks to develop emotionally, economically, and environmentally sustainable agricultural enterprises. In other words, they do things the right way. If you haven’t seen Food, Inc. or Fresh, please watch them. I have copies of both movies if you’d like to borrow them.

We need more of this guy. From the movie Fresh:
