Taking Things Personally

Try not to take everything personally, things that people say and do don’t always have anything to do with you.

Every once in a while, I read Daily Om. They are Pearl’s of Wisdom that you can have sent to your email every day. They’re short enough (typically three paragraphs) that I can take a minute or two break from whatever I’m doing to read them. The best part is that more often than not, they relate well to something that is going on in my life at that time. It’s like someone knew that that is exactly what I needed to read at that moment. Pretty cool stuff.

This following Daily Om reminds me of something I read in The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s a quick read and definitely worth your time. Here’s the passage:

Every time you interact with others, you have the choice to listen to, acknowledge, and let go of their words, or you can take what they are saying personally. Taking things personally is often the result of perceiving a person’s actions or words as an affront or slight. In order to take something personally, you must read negative intent in an individual’s words or actions. But what people do and say has no bearing upon you and is usually based on their own experiences, emotions, and perceptions. If you attempt to take what they do or say personally, you may end up feeling hurt without reason.

If you are tempted to take a comment or action personally, creating some distance between yourself and the other person can help you. Try to determine what is at the root of your feelings. Ask yourself if the other person’s words or actions are just reinforcing some insecurity within you or if you can really be sure that an offense was intended. You may even want to ask them what they meant. Finally, put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Instead of taking their words as the truth, or as a personal affront, remember that whatever was said or done is based on their opinion and is more reflective of what is going on inside of them, rather than having anything to do with you. You may have been an easy target for someone having a bad day, and their comments may have been offered with no ill intentions.

When you recognize that what anyone says or does doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with you, you will no longer feel hurt or attacked. While it’s easy to take things personally, you should never let anyone’s perceptions or actions affect how you see yourself or your worth. Your life is personal to you, and it is up to you to influence your own value and sense of well-being.

Reindeer Games – T-shirt Deadline

On Saturday, December 17, CrossFit Adventure will host their version of Reindeer Games. I’m not sure what types of games Rudolph and the gang played, but I bet it was nothing like this!!

Teams of 4 (two men and two women) will participate in 3 WODs: Santa’s Workshop, Loading Up the Sleigh, and Delivering the Presents on Christmas morning. And just like Christmas, the WODs will not be disclosed until that morning.

The Games are open to the first 12 teams that register (8 Rx’d and 4 Scaled). In order to participate in the Rx’d event, at least two teammates must be able to climb a rope and do double unders. Everything else will be standard CrossFit movements (for the most part).

The cost is $200 per team. To register, follow the link in the right sidebar. The fee includes entry into the all-day event, a T-shirt for every teammate, a stocking full of goodies, and a coupon to use toward Hiroshi’s catering which will be onsite that day.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in the Rx’d division and to the top Scaled team.

Soon after registering, you’ll be sent an email asking for the participants’ name and T-shirt sizes. Women can choose between fitted and non-fitted shirts. **To ensure your desired T-shirt size, please register by the end of November. If registering after November, you will still receive a T-shirt, but a specific size can not be guaranteed.

Registration is from 8-8:30am. The Games start at 9am.

Let’s show the Reindeer how WE play games!!

Future Mountain Bike Park

Marin County approved an “all skills” mountain bike park near Novato. The funding is still uncertain, but this would be another great playground for all of us. Especially as we get more into the adventure sports (GORUCK challenge this weekend for Rob, Dan, Myles, and I!!). Here’s hoping the plans continue to move forward.
Below is a video of a similar facility in Boulder, CO.

For Your Family

I like to think that at CrossFit Adventure, we’re a family. But that bond extends beyond our walls. The decisions you make affects everyone else. Everyone.

YOU make a difference by the simple choices you make. Every time you choose a non-organic food, you are choosing food allergies. You are choosing cancer. You are choosing fatigue and insomnia. Every time you say “yes” to those foods, you are telling the policy makers that it’s okay to pervert your food.

For the sake of your community. For the sake of your family. For the sake of your own health. Choose quality products that have been grown or raised with a conscience.

You have such great power. Use it wisely.

Body Fat Test – Tuesday, November 22, 2011

It’s a great time to have this done, seeing that the majority of the group will be wrapping up the 30 day CFA Paleo Challenge. This method of testing your body fat is far more accurate than many of the products you see out there, like your scale at home or the handheld test version. Space is limited to 20 members, so please sign-up from 12-7p. First test is $49, and re-tests are $39.

Here is an excerpt from their website and you can also click on the image below for more info:

Why Hydrostatic?

THE GOLD STANDARD OF BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSIS IS HYDROSTATIC OR HYDRODENSITOMETRY. Hydrostatic weighing is the most accurate way to measure body fat and is the method by which all other means of measurement compare their degree of error.

Body Composition: What does it mean, and how do I fit in?

Body Composition is the technical term used to describe the different components that, when taken together, makes up a person’s body weight. Keep in mind that body composition and body weight are two entirely different concepts and they are not interchangeable. To get a better understanding of the difference between the two, you need to understand a bit about anatomy and physiology.

Body Tissues

The human body is composed of a variety of different tissue types. The so-called ‘lean’ tissues, such as muscle, bone and organs are metabolically active, while adipose (fat tissue) is not. Adipose tissue can be classified into three different categories:

1. Essential fat - supports life and is extremely important to normal bodily function.
2. Storage fat - protects internal organs and supplies some energy requirements.
3. Non-essential fat - serves no real purpose and may in fact be detrimental to health.

The difference in these tissues is not readily distinguishable by stepping on a scale. A scale simply takes the sum of everything (fat, muscle, water, hair - you name it), and gives an absolute weight measurement. Scales can’t determine the lean-to-fat ratio of that weight. An inividual can be “over-weight” and not “over-fat.” A bodybuilder, for example, may be 8% body fat, yet at two hundred and fifty pounds may be considered “over-weight” by a typical height-weight chart. Therefore, these charts are not a good indication of a person’s ideal body weight for optimal health, much less for athletic performance.
