This Saturday, May 18, is going to be a FUN day!!

At 8:30am, we are walking (or Parkouring) next door to Apex Movement, our local Parkour gym. If you have never heard of Parkour, you probably have not seen The Office. Watch the video below to get The Office’s rendition of Parkour. Essentially, Parkour is getting form point A to point B as creatively as possible.

In the future, we will have a dual membership with Apex Movement. Try it out for free this Saturday at 8:30am. We will still be having normal CrossFit classes at 8:30 and 9:30am on Saturday.

After the class(es), head up the road to Harvest House where Nathan will be hosting a free community presentation on Balancing Hormones. Balancing hormones is the key to health. Easier said than done, though. I’ll talk about the most important steps you can take to begin that balance.

You betcha!

Yes, I know, we have pretty much exhausted the reasons to eat bacon. But I’ve got another one for you.

105 year old Pearl Cantrell credits bacon as the secret to her longevity. According to local NBC affiiliate KRBC, Pearl states that “I love bacon, I eat it everyday. I don’t feel as old as I am, that’s all I can say.” For the complete Huffington Post article, click here.

Of course, as with everything, quality matters. Always buy the best bacon possible. The best I’ve found is from U.S. Wellness Meats. And it’s the best tasting too.

The best part of the U.S. Wellness Meats’ bacon is that it is free of any sugars. Take a look around the supermarket and try to find some bacon made without sugar. I dare you. To get to U.S. Wellness Meats, just click on the link in our sidebar and 8% of your purchase will be given back to CFA!!

Enjoy Breakfast again!! And lunch, and dinner, and snacks, and . . .

What can you accomplish in 6 weeks?

A 30 pound back squat or deadlift PR?

Or 15 pounds weight loss?

Maybe even dropping your cholesterol number by 50 points!!

Depending on what YOUR Peak Performance is, these are all attainable goals. The caveat is that you need to figure out what’s right for YOU. Stop living by someone else’s rules. You are your own person and it’s time you start treating yourself that way.

Expect the results that you thought were impossible. Expect them!!

Once you start living according to your biochemical needs, you’ll start seeing the results you’ve always wanted . . . and fast.

Attend one of the Peak Performance seminars and learn the lifestyle modifications and nutritional secrets you’ll need to reach your Peak Performance.

After the seminar, join the Peak Performance 6-Week Program and take it to the next level by individualizing your own nutrition plan. You will learn exactly which foods are right for you, in what combinations, and even your ideal fuel mix (the specific ratio of carbs, fats, and proteins).

See the flyer above for dates/times.

Join now for the early bird price of $295. On April 16, the price increases to $345. Discount apply for those that have already been Metabolically Typed. For graduates of a previous Peak Performance Program, the cost is only $45!!

CrossFit Adventure and Harvest House are teaming up to bring you a free seminar on cholesterol. This Saturday, March 23 at 11am, Nathan Brammeier will discuss the true story of cholesterol.

Mounting evidence shows that our unrelenting desire to lower cholesterol levels has only served to line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies. It’s possible, in fact, that this campaign has been detrimental to our health by actually increasing the risks of coronary heart disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. This is the story of cholesterol and saturated fat that they don’t want you to hear.

Nathan will follow this information with a natural, cost-effective approach to reach your optimum health. He will be available afterwards to discuss a nutritive interpretation if you’d like to bring in your results including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and LDL particle size.

Harvest House is located at 2395 Monument Blvd. in Concord, CA 94520.

Miriam and Olivier Rubel have been an amazing addition to our CFA family. I have been particularly impressed with how much Miriam has been able to improve over the past year. I remember her frustrations when she first started. She was sick of doing pull-ups with two bands so she switched to ring rows and was very determined to get back to doing pull-ups. I was amazed when just a few weeks ago she showed off her unassisted pull-ups!! Amazing.

When I first saw her “double unders” just a few months ago, I knew that she had a LONG way to go. We worked on them a bit. And she worked on them a LOT. Again, just a few weeks ago, she showed off her double-unders – stringing 6 or 7 of them together.

Great work Miriam!! Your hard work and dedication have really payed off.

How long have you been at CFA?

Since December 2011.

What got you started with CrossFit?

It was a long, drawn-out process. Back in Chicago, I was part of Bulldog bootcamp, which was the best fitness experience of my life (until CFA!). The owner/coach, who is now a Master’s athlete at the CrossFit games, expanded his business and opened up a CrossFit box. I always had a lot of respect for him and was curious about CF, although I was unable to check it out. After bootcamp, I sought other challenges and participated in several endurance events, mainly triathlons. I trained with a great group and close friends. However, a few years before moving to California, my fitness level took a sharp downturn for a number of reasons. I began to realize how far I’d slipped and missed sports so I trained for another triathlon when moving to Walnut Creek in 2010. The training didn’t get me to where I wanted physically or socially but I did meet Flavia who told me about CFA and gave it rave reviews. Around the same time, Olivier (my hubbie) came home one night and raved about the physical transformation of our friend who joined a box in Davis. I got in touch with Nathan that night and signed us both up! I’ve been WODing regularly ever since with Olivier by my side.

Do you remember your first WOD? Describe it and how you felt.

Uh, yes, I remember clearly. It was Fight Gone Bad. Carolyn was coaching me to get lower (below parallel) on my wall balls. I turned, looked right at her and said, “This is as far as I can go,” though inside I was screaming it at her – LOL! I didn’t understand how four minutes of each exercise felt so long – even with the 10-second breaks! Since then, I’ve done FGB twice, each time increasing reps and depth. Carolyn would be pleased :-).

When did you know something had to change before joining CFA?

I spoke to some of this in question 2 but I’ve always sought out physical challenges and ways to push myself athletically. I am also very social and like to mix the two. Triathlons were not as fun anymore. Training took up big chunks of my time and wallet. CFA seemed like a good solution! I’d be challenged but not forced to compromise or give up social engagements and other things to participate. Instead, I’ve gained so much more.

Favorite CrossFit WOD and/or exercise.

Push presses because I feel powerful and strong doing them. I also like pull ups, not that they are super fun, but I’m encouraged by my progress. Considering where I started over a year ago with ring rows, I am now determined to conquer them!

Least favorite CrossFit WOD and/or exercise.

FRAN. I never want to do it again. Never. Ever. As for an exercise, it’s a close race between thrusters and toes-to-bar. Both feel awful to me.

Describe your most memorable CrossFit experience.

My most memorable moment was when I did RANDY a while back because it was the first WOD I RX’d. It was a slow, grueling finish but everyone supported me by cheering and waiting until I was done before they left and started their days. Personally, I don’t manage attention well and was taken back at how much everyone vested in my performance that day and felt humbled. It was a great feeling and remember wishing Oliver was there to witness it.

Tell us about an area of your life most impacted by your decision to join CFA.

Through CFA I feel connected to a community in a way I have not felt since moving to California three-and-a-half years ago. Aside from enduring countless WODs (and fun!), many CFAers work in the public sector and have careers that very much overlap with mine. It’s refreshing to be part of a community in which I do not shut down a conversation by talking about work, and instead, we have an unspoken understanding and respect for each other. I can be myself here. It’s a pleasure to know I have this welcoming place called “CFA” to come to and, with hard work and a community of supportive people, see tangible, measurable results. I feel a sense of accomplishment almost every time at the gym. Unfortunately, this is NOT usually the case with the girls that I work with during the week despite my consistency and dedication. CFA in many ways helps me to lead a well-balanced life that is difficult to put into words. And of course, it’s not too bad either when friends and family notice my physical transformations .

Who inspires you most in the gym?

Of course the coaches because they always point out strengths in my performance, especially Nathan and Dave, even when I feel frustrated and stagnant. This keeps me encouraged and uninhibited during my WODs because I know fast and heavy is NOT how this gym measures success and effort. The coaches are also super supportive when outside stuff enters the gym arena, which keeps me coming back! In terms of members, it’s Amanda. She inspires me because she is an excellent athlete and kinda a natural at it. She’s way too modest. I feel like Amanda is always there in “it” with us, very approachable and does not take herself too seriously. I like that. Olivier is inspirational in so many ways in the gym and outside. He never ceases to amaze me at how well he knows me and how to motivate me to strive for my best in everything.

What advice can you give to those looking to “Dominate The Voice”?

We are each motivated by different drives in life. Find yours and conquer it but know consistency, failure and a supportive community are paramount to your success.
